The study of alchemy is a most peculiar one indeed. To the orderly, scholarly mind, it has neither rhyme nor reason, and yet its practitioners would still call it a science. Upon further observation, one could perhaps say that the more devoted alchemists are indeed brilliant; so terrifyingly so that the observer must wonder if they aren't just half-mad.

- Kertus Ferrigan, Studies of the Known World: Volume V

Alchemy is a complex and somewhat madcap science that defies the laws of nature, cannot be explained by magic, and cannot be controlled by the gods' divine power. Due to the nature of alchemy, some alchemists are considered to be a little mad, but all have an interesting and sometimes downright brilliant outlook on the world because of their art and its many quirks.

Any race but the maguses may be an alchemist (for they are often too haughty towards the study of anything that has nothing to do with magic to bother taking it up). However, any person may utilize an alchemy product if they should acquire one.

ingredients.
It is sometimes surprising what passes as an alchemical ingredient. Ingredients are comprised of plants, minerals, and animal products. The most common ingredients can often be gathered in nearby forests and fields, while the rarer ingredients (for the more potent results) are often harder to come by one way or another. sometime at grave peril to the gatherer. Naturally, an alchemist's stock of rarer ingredients is always less plentiful than the common ingredients; common ingredients aren't nearly as expensive as the ingredients that require death-defying feats to acquire, either.

alchemical reactions.
An alchemical reaction is the reaction between alchemical ingredients; unlike chemical or physical reactions, alchemical reactions have widely-varying effects that don't necessarily follow a specific pattern. Usually, ingredients must be prepared beforehand, as not everything from an ingredient is always needed in the reaction. Preparation includes but is not limited to cutting, juicing, mixing, boiling, and so on. An alchemical reaction always requires a catalyst to initiate the effect, or else the other ingredients will not react.

elixirs & crystals.
Elixirs and crystals are a common and marketable product of alchemy; they are substances created from alchemical ingredients that have already been introduced to a catalyst, but had their alchemical reaction prolonged. They come in all kinds of colors, and can be used in multiple ways. Most elixirs need only to come into contact with whatever the user would like to apply the effect to, while crystals need to be broken in some way to begin their alchemical reaction - they are somewhat fragile, so this is not hard to achieve. Elixirs and crystals are commonly sold in markets, as they have numerous uses. Characters, including the alchemists themselves, may only carry up to two elixirs and/or crystals on them at one time. Elixirs and crystals that have gone unused for too long tend to become volatile; too much jostling can and will result in unintended effect activation that may or may not result in death.

alchemical effects.
This is the list of all possible alchemical effects.

Rapid Growth - Applicable to any living organism. This effect lasts up to an hour, and is not necessarily immediate. Can be made into a bright green elixir that acts upon contact with the desired target.

Rapid Shrinkage - Applicable to any living organism. This effect lasts up to an hour, and is not necessarily immediate. Can be made into a dark purple elixir that acts upon contact with the desired target.

Explosion - Not overly difficult to concoct. Immediate effect. Blast radius and force dependent on quantity of ingredients and catalyst. Not recommendable to market, or let sit. Can be made into amber-colored crystals.

Sleep - Applicable to any fauna (animals). Effect creates a translucent, light purple gas that induces a deep and heavy sleep when inhaled. Ingredients are expensive and/or difficult to procure, resulting in a higher price than is the norm for other elixirs. Expanse of gas and length of sleep depends on amount of ingredients and catalyst used. Can be made into dark purple crystals.

De-Gravitizing - Applicable to anything within radius of effect. Requires rare ingredients that make it expensive to make and/or buy. Lasts roughly two minutes, effective immediately. Radius of effect depends on quantity of ingredients and catalyst used. Can be made into bright blue crystals.

Incomplete.
