thourne
Hello, and welcome to Thourne! This thread contains all the vital information you may need to know before diving right into the city, so please look over it before you go off gallivanting.
location & size.
Thourne is a moderate-sized city built on wooden stilts across the River Crux, located in the northwestern corner of Elistar. The River Crux continues north into the Mayas mountains, which, between the impassable mountains and the forbidden Unending forest to the east, makes Thourne a key point on the route for any merchant coming into or going out of Elistar by land.
brief history.
Thourne is not the oldest of cities, though it is one of the most prosperous, though not in the same prestigious way that Kingshill is. Thourne was once a simple merchants' town, set up to make the trade route in and out of Elistar with goods easier and safer, until a few clever minds realized its potential for profit and power was being wasted. What began as trouble with river bandits (which the Elistaran military initially ignored due to lack of importance) grew over the course of a few decades as the criminals moved in, sinking tooth and claw into the town until they had a hand in everything that went on in it. Thourne's reputation for crime attracted many a crook, and forced some of its more upstanding civilians to move out. By the time Elistar's government recognized the threat of Thourne's infectious lawlessness, it was too late; Thourne had already been burned down and rebuilt three times due to gang wars, and had firmly established itself as Elistar's criminal underbelly.
in-house affiliations.
These are Character Affiliation groups which have an impact and role in the city. The city occasionally hosts Affiliation events for them which allow characters of that Affiliation to gain rank and reputation.
Black Gear
Black Gear is one of Thourne's leading criminal gangs, founded a number of decades ago in order to take over Thourne. Though still muscling it out with a few other top gangs for the spot, Black Gear has accumulated quite a bit of wealth and power, even if they still like to live it rough in the lawless city.

key locations.
These are common points of interest found throughout the city, completely intended for players to utilize in their role playing.
Gambler's Hand
The Gambler's Hand is a prosperous illegal gambling establishment located in the market district. Violence is forbidden within its walls, per order of the establishment's owner Jarry, who is friend to all criminals with coin in their pockets. The Gambler's Hand has become a common neutral territory and meeting house for the gangs of Thourne and all their business, from the black market to paying off government officials, especially when their business involves each other - so long as the business is civil. The regular criminals also enjoy frequenting the Gambler's Hand - it's a good place to turn a profit if you know what you're doing.
The Black Market
Thourne sports the most renowned black market in all of Astraia, and makes no attempt to hide it. The black market is set on a series of open piers towards the center of the city, connecting to most of the city's other districts. No one owns or runs the market, though some vendors are inclined to pay tribute to one of Thourne's gangs to keep their illicit goods safe. There is very little that you can't find in the black market for the right price.
More to come.
